For now, the NightOwl is a solid choice of a closed back headphone with a very spacious image, sweet treble and a relatively neutral bass and midrange tonality. I am contemplating the addition of the original Nighthawks to my. Will be interesting to see if some of those that didnt get it first time around will convert. Maybe it is just because I like the more open design. I am sure they will be coming out with more fantastic headphones in the near future. I have been quite pleased and satisfied with my AQ Nightowl Carbons for the past month. Gonna be watching reactions and reviews on both with interest. Somehow, the Nighthawks have an emotional factor, they pull me into the music. My main point, in this thread - the NH and NO are both very good and musical headphones, well able to tell of differences elsewhere in the system. I know this chip from before, it is the same as in my Tascam DA-3000 (BurrBrown PCM1795), and I know that it can produce very good sound, if properly implemented. I suspect that some of this comes from the fairly good DAC chip employed in the DA-10, and a headphone amp quite well tuned to it. I have been in doubt before also, but generally, I have liked the setup best with the Jade carrying much of the amplification load. So it is only about, what happens with the Jade into the amplification chain, or not. Headphones: AKG K550 MKII, Apple AirPods Pro 2, Audio Technica ATH-A900X, Audio Technica R70X, AudioQuest NightHawk Carbon, AudioQuest NightOwl Carbon, Avantone Pro Planar, Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay H6, Denon AH-D5000, Philips Fidelio X2HR, Philips Fidelio X3, Sennheiser HD 650, Sennheiser Momentum MK2, Sivga SV021, Sony MDR-Z7 Amp: Audio GD R2R. This test is done playing dsd files from my hard disk, using the DA-10 as DAC - in both cases. The DA-10 direct to the NH does sound good, very direct, while including the Jade seems to give a little veil, with less information. This is a more even match than I expected. Either, the hawks direct from the DA-10, or with DA10 (through analog out) to the Audiotailor Jade tube amp, and from there, to the hawks. In their never ending search for better sound, the team at AudioQuest quickly set out to design an alternative to the NightHawk. Testing now, with the Nighthawks, using the Denon DA-10 (that I bought with the NH) as usb-connected sound card on my main pc, in my home office. This is not to say, tubes are allways best.
